Soft Credit Check - Hard Inquiry

A soft credit check is a credit inquiry initiated by a company or the person whose credit is being checked. Soft credit checks do not affect the credit score of the individual whose credit is being checked and are used primarily for screening purposes. Soft credit checks are also referred to as soft pulls. While soft credit checks do not affect a person's credit score, they are listed on the individual's credit report for two years.

A hard inquiry or hard pull is a credit check that includes a full written credit report and deducts points from the person's credit score. Hard inquires remain on a person's credit report for two years.
